This is a true wild betta, a member of the labyrinth fish family (Osphronemidae) with the remarkable ability to gulp air thanks to a specialized breathing organ. In its native Southeast Asian lowlands, it frequents calm, shaded waters often stained the color of tea by leaf litter and peat—blackwater habitats where visibility is low, oxygen can dip, and life rewards patience and subtlety.
