Black Israeli Ram Care Guide

The Black Israeli Ram is a striking ornamental colour form of the small South American cichlid Mikrogeophagus ramirezi. Its selectively bred dark body can range from charcoal and black to smoky grey, often accented by iridescent blue speckles, bright eyes and subtle yellow or red markings.Like other ram cichlids, it has a compact, high-backed body and expressive behaviour. Pairs may form close bonds and become noticeably territorial when spawning, yet outside breeding activity these fish are generally more restrained than many larger cichlids and spend much of their time investigating the lower parts of the aquarium.The wild species originates in the Orinoco basin of Venezuela and Colombia, where it inhabits relatively slow-moving streams, shallow pools and flooded areas with sandy or muddy bottoms. Leaf litter, submerged plants and scattered roots provide a complex setting for this small cichlid and its young.Mikrogeophagus ramirezi was described in the mid-twentieth century and has since become one of the best-known dwarf cichlids in the aquarium hobby. The Black Israeli Ram is part of the extensive range of captive-bred forms developed from this naturally colourful species, with its unusually dark appearance making it especially distinctive.
