Black Ram Care Guide

The Black Ram is a dark colour form of the small South American cichlid Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, with a compact, deep-bodied shape and the characteristic long dorsal fin associated with ram cichlids. Its selectively developed coloration ranges from charcoal and black to smoky grey, often with subtle blue iridescence and occasional traces of the species’ original facial markings.Despite its cichlid identity, the Black Ram is generally a relatively peaceful fish. It has an alert, inquisitive personality and spends much of its time examining the substrate, plants and surrounding territory, becoming more assertive when paired for spawning.Mikrogeophagus ramirezi naturally inhabits the Orinoco basin of Venezuela and Colombia, especially slow-moving streams, shallow lagoons and seasonally flooded areas. These environments typically have warm, soft, acidic water, sandy or muddy bottoms and abundant submerged vegetation and leaf litter.The species was described in the twentieth century and became one of the aquarium hobby’s best-known dwarf cichlids. The Black Ram is a selectively bred ornamental variety rather than a separately occurring wild species, and its appearance can vary considerably between breeding lines.Like other ram cichlids, it forms a pair bond and both parents may participate in guarding eggs and young. Its small size, expressive behaviour and unusual dark coloration have made it a distinctive alternative to the more familiar blue and gold ram varieties.
