The Black Tail Guppy is a colourful selectively bred form of Poecilia reticulata, recognised for the strong contrast between its often bright body and broad black caudal fin. Depending on the strain, the body may show blue, red, yellow, metallic or iridescent shades, while the tail can range from solid black to patterned black with hints of other colours.Like other guppies, Black Tail Guppies are active, alert and constantly exploring their surroundings. Males display their colours and fins during courtship, while females are larger-bodied and less ornate. They are livebearers, giving birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs, and can produce numerous broods from a single mating.Poecilia reticulata is native to northern South America and nearby islands, including parts of Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Brazil and Trinidad.
