Good to Know
Neocaridina davidi is the species behind the Bloody Mary Shrimp, a selectively bred red colour form prized for its unusually deep, wine-red pigmentation.
Gender Differences
Females are usually larger, more robust, and more intensely coloured, with a broader curved abdomen and often a visible saddle or eggs, while males are smaller and slimmer.
About the Bloody Mary Shrimp
The Bloody Mary Shrimp is a striking ornamental colour form of Neocaridina davidi, recognised for its rich crimson to burgundy body colour. Unlike some red shrimp varieties whose colour is concentrated mainly on the shell, Bloody Mary specimens can show deep colour through much of the body, creating a particularly vivid appearance against aquatic plants and dark backgrounds. These tiny freshwater crustaceans are peaceful, constantly active grazers. They move across leaves, wood, stones, and other surfaces with delicate walking legs, picking at algae, microorganisms, and organic particles. Their quiet, industrious behaviour and small size make them popular inhabitants of planted nano aquariums.Neocaridina davidi originates in East Asia, where wild populations inhabit freshwater streams, pools, and slow-moving waters. Wild individuals are generally brownish, translucent, or variably patterned rather than the intense red seen in Bloody Mary Shrimp; that colour is the result of many generations of selective breeding.Like other dwarf freshwater shrimp, Bloody Mary Shrimp periodically shed their exoskeletons as they grow. Females carry developing eggs beneath the abdomen, and the young hatch as miniature versions of the adults rather than passing through a free-swimming larval stage. The species has been sold under several changing scientific names, including Neocaridina heteropoda and Neocaridina davidi, reflecting revisions in the classification of these widely bred ornamental shrimp. Its hardiness, peaceful nature, and remarkable range of cultivated colour forms have made it one of the best-known freshwater aquarium invertebrates.
