Blue Jelly Shrimp Care Guide

The Blue Jelly Shrimp is a translucent to softly opaque blue colour morph of the popular freshwater dwarf shrimp Neocaridina davidi. Its body may range from pale icy blue to a richer blue-grey, with individual colour intensity varying according to genetics, age and condition. The delicate colour allows internal structures and developing eggs to remain partly visible.These small shrimp are active, peaceful invertebrates that spend much of their time walking over surfaces and picking at microscopic food. Their fan-like appendages help them collect fine particles, while their walking legs allow them to explore plants, wood, rocks and other submerged surfaces. They are generally most noticeable when grazing or gathering in groups.Neocaridina davidi originates in parts of East Asia, where related wild populations inhabit freshwater streams, ponds and slow-moving waters. Wild individuals are typically brownish, grey or variably patterned rather than the intense colours seen in aquarium strains, and their natural habitats provide abundant surfaces for algae and biofilm growth.The Blue Jelly variety is not a separate species but a line developed through selective breeding in the aquarium trade. Like other Neocaridina colour morphs, it can reproduce readily and may produce offspring with a range of blue intensity or less predictable coloration, particularly when mixed with other colour strains.Despite their tiny size, Blue Jelly Shrimp are valuable members of an aquarium’s cleanup community and are fascinating to observe at close range. Their constant grazing, rapid response to movement and translucent blue bodies make them a distinctive feature of planted freshwater displays.
