Blue Mickey Mouse Platy Care Guide

The Blue Mickey Mouse Platy is a striking cultivated form of the Southern Platyfish, with blue or bluish-grey body tones and the characteristic dark marking at the base of the tail that resembles the silhouette of Mickey Mouse. Colour intensity can vary between individuals, and selectively bred lines may show additional patches of black, red or metallic sheen.This is a small, active livebearer with a generally peaceful nature. Platies spend much of their time exploring open water and vegetation, and they are inquisitive fish that readily investigate activity around the aquarium. Males are slimmer and more streamlined, while females are deeper-bodied and often noticeably larger.Wild Xiphophorus maculatus originates in freshwater habitats of eastern Mexico, Guatemala and Belize, where it occurs in slow-moving streams, ponds, marshes and canals. These environments may contain abundant aquatic plants, submerged roots and a mixture of gentle currents and still water.The species has been popular in the aquarium hobby for generations because of its hardiness, lively behaviour and wide range of selectively developed colours and patterns. Like other livebearers, it gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying adhesive eggs, and females can produce multiple broods after a single mating.
