About the Blue Peacock
The Blue Peacock, Aulonocara stuartgranti, is a striking Lake Malawi cichlid recognized for the intense electric-blue coloration that develops in mature males. Depending on its geographic form, the blue may be concentrated across the face and flanks or combined with yellow, orange or pale metallic markings on the body and fins. Females are much more subdued, with silvery gray-brown coloration that provides natural camouflage. This species has a streamlined body and relatively pointed head, giving it an elegant appearance compared with the deeper-bodied mbuna cichlids. Its large eyes and specialized sensory pores around the jaw are adaptations for locating tiny prey beneath the substrate, and its feeding behavior is closely linked to the sandy environments it inhabits. In nature, Aulonocara stuartgranti is associated with the rocky and sandy margins of Lake Malawi, where it moves over open bottom areas near cover. It is generally less boisterous than many mbuna, although males can defend territories and display vigorously toward rivals, particularly when spawning.Like other peacock cichlids, it is a maternal mouthbrooder: after spawning, the female carries the eggs and developing fry in her mouth until the young are sufficiently developed to emerge. The species is represented by several geographically distinct color forms, and these local variations are often sold under different commercial names. The Blue Peacock is part of the diverse Aulonocara lineage, a group endemic to Lake Malawi that has become popular in aquaria because of its vivid male coloration, engaging behavior and relatively specialized natural feeding strategy.
