Blue Tiger Cichlid Care Guide

The Blue Tiger Cichlid, Nimbochromis polystigma, is a substantial Malawi cichlid with a powerful, streamlined body and a broad head. Adult males can develop an attractive blue sheen, while females and younger fish typically show mottled brown, olive or gold tones marked with darker vertical blotches.This species is a purposeful predator rather than a delicate community fish. It is alert and territorial, using sudden bursts of speed to pursue prey, and mature males may become particularly assertive around chosen breeding areas.In nature, Nimbochromis polystigma comes from Lake Malawi in East Africa, where it occurs around rocky and mixed rock-and-sand habitats. Its coloration and body pattern provide disruptive camouflage among stones, sediment and aquatic vegetation while it searches for smaller fish and invertebrates.Like other members of the Nimbochromis genus, it is a mouthbrooding cichlid. After spawning, the female carries the eggs and developing young in her mouth, protecting them until the fry are sufficiently developed to venture out.
