Calico Platy Care Guide

The Calico Platy is a colourful cultivated form of Xiphophorus maculatus, recognised by its mottled pattern of red, orange, yellow, black and sometimes pale cream. The exact arrangement of colours varies widely, so individual fish can look dramatically different even within the same strain. Its compact, deep-bodied shape and rounded fins give it the classic platy silhouette.This is a peaceful, lively livebearer that spends much of its time in the middle areas of the water column. Calico Platies are social and inquisitive, often moving actively through their surroundings while pausing to investigate plants, décor and potential food. Males are more streamlined than females and display the modified anal fin characteristic of livebearing poeciliids.Xiphophorus maculatus is native to freshwater habitats of Mexico and parts of Central America, where it occurs in slow-moving streams, pools, drainage channels and vegetated margins. Wild populations inhabit waters that can be warm, mineral-rich and somewhat alkaline, and they forage among aquatic vegetation and submerged debris.The species has been established in aquariums for generations and has become one of the most familiar ornamental livebearers.
