Copadichromis azureus Care Guide

Copadichromis azureus is a striking Lake Malawi cichlid best known for the intense electric-blue coloration of mature males. The blue may cover the body and extend across the fins, while females and juveniles are much more subdued, usually showing silvery, grey or brownish tones with faint markings.This species has the relatively streamlined shape associated with open-water Lake Malawi cichlids. Males become most spectacular when mature and displaying, often showing contrasting dark fin edges or facial markings depending on their locality and strain.In nature, Copadichromis azureus inhabits the clear, alkaline waters of Lake Malawi, particularly areas associated with rocky shores, sandy margins and open water. It is a plankton-feeding species that often leaves the immediate shelter of rocks to search the water column for tiny drifting organisms.Like other mouthbrooding Malawi cichlids, the female carries fertilised eggs and developing young in her mouth. Males establish display areas and court females, while the species generally occupies the middle levels of the lake rather than behaving as a permanent bottom-dweller.The species is widely known in the aquarium trade as the Azureus Peacock and is valued for combining the vivid colour of a peacock cichlid with the active, observant behaviour typical of Lake Malawi haplochromines.
