Crowntail Care Guide

The Crowntail is a selectively bred form of Betta splendens, famous for its dramatic fins in which the rays extend beyond the webbing to create a spiky, crown-like silhouette. It occurs in an extraordinary range of colours, including red, blue, turquoise, black, white and metallic shades, often with contrasting patterns.Like other bettas, the Crowntail has a labyrinth organ that allows it to breathe atmospheric air as well as extract oxygen from water. This adaptation helps the species survive in warm, slow-moving and sometimes oxygen-poor habitats.Wild Betta splendens originate in Southeast Asia, especially Thailand and neighbouring parts of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Their natural environments include shallow marshes, rice paddies, pools and gently flowing waterways with dense aquatic vegetation.Crowntail Bettas are intelligent, observant fish with distinctive personalities, but males are strongly territorial and may display their fins and gill covers when confronted by rivals. The wild species has much shorter fins and less intense colours than the ornamental varieties developed through selective breeding.The species name splendens means “shining” or “brilliant,” an apt reference to the vivid colours and iridescent scales that make ornamental bettas among the most recognisable freshwater aquarium fish.
