Dragon Blood Peacock Care Guide

The Dragon Blood Peacock is a selectively bred freshwater cichlid associated with the Aulonocara group, commonly known as Malawi peacocks. Its appearance varies between breeding lines, but mature males typically show a striking blend of blood-red, orange, yellow and blue coloration, often with metallic highlights on the face and fins. Females and juveniles are generally much less colourful, displaying silvery, tan or brown tones with darker vertical markings.Like other peacock cichlids, it has a relatively streamlined body and a pointed head suited to sifting through the substrate. Specialized sensory pores around the lower jaw help Aulonocara detect small organisms hidden in sand, an adaptation that contributes to the group’s distinctive foraging behaviour.The natural ancestry of this fish lies in Lake Malawi in East Africa, a large alkaline Rift Valley lake famous for its extraordinary cichlid diversity. However, Dragon Blood Peacocks are aquarium-developed hybrids rather than a naturally occurring wild species, and they do not represent one single location or scientifically defined Aulonocara species.In aquariums, these cichlids are active, observant and generally less combative than many mbuna, although males may defend territories and compete with one another. Their vivid colour, manageable adult size and engaging behaviour have made them one of the most popular selectively bred Malawi peacock varieties.As with many ornamental cichlid strains, colour intensity and body pattern can differ considerably among breeders. Some commercially sold fish may also carry mixed Aulonocara ancestry, so the name Dragon Blood Peacock is best understood as a trade designation rather than a formal taxonomic name.
