Eggplant Shrimp Care Guide

The Eggplant Shrimp is a striking color morph of Neocaridina davidi, typically displaying deep violet, purple, burgundy or dusky eggplant tones. Individual coloration can vary considerably, with some shrimp showing translucent areas, dark striping or a richer opaque finish as they mature.Like other Neocaridina shrimp, it is a small, peaceful invertebrate that spends much of its time grazing across surfaces. Its delicate walking legs and constantly moving feeding appendages help it investigate algae, biofilm and tiny particles, while its fan-shaped tail enables quick retreats when startled.Neocaridina davidi is native to freshwater habitats in East Asia, where related populations occur in streams, ponds, ditches and slow-moving waterways. These environments commonly contain vegetation, leaf litter, submerged roots and other surfaces where the shrimp can forage and shelter.The species was formerly widely known in the aquarium trade under names such as Neocaridina heteropoda and Neocaridina denticulata sinensis. Selective breeding has produced many ornamental color forms, including the Eggplant Shrimp, while retaining the species’ characteristic hardiness and prolific breeding behaviour.Egg-bearing females carry their developing eggs beneath the abdomen, gently fanning them with their swimmerets until fully formed miniature shrimp hatch. The young emerge as tiny replicas of the adults rather than passing through a free-swimming larval stage.
