Geophagus altifons Care Guide

Geophagus altifrons is a large, deep-bodied South American cichlid with the characteristic sloping forehead and substantial mouth associated with the eartheaters. Its base colour is usually silvery to olive-grey, often marked by a dark lateral spot and subtle blue, gold or reddish iridescence on the face, fins and flanks. Mature individuals can become particularly impressive, with extended fin rays and a powerful profile.This species is best known for its constant interaction with the substrate. It takes mouthfuls of sand, extracts edible particles and expels the cleaned grains through the gill openings, giving the group a lively, shifting character.
