GloFish Angelfish are selectively produced fluorescent forms of the familiar freshwater angelfish, with luminous red, orange, green or mixed coloration that stands out against their tall, laterally compressed bodies. Their elongated dorsal and anal fins give them an unmistakable triangular silhouette, while long thread-like pelvic fins add to their graceful appearance.The species is based on Pterophyllum scalare, a cichlid known for its calm, deliberate swimming style and strong social personality. Although often peaceful when young, adults can become territorial and may form pair bonds, especially during spawning. Their height and flowing fins make them visually distinctive among community aquarium fishes.Wild Pterophyllum scalare originates in slow-moving rivers, flooded forests and tributaries of the Amazon and adjacent South American drainage systems. These habitats are commonly shaded by overhanging vegetation and filled with submerged roots, branches and leaf litter, creating a complex environment through which angelfish navigate vertically.The GloFish form was developed through genetic modification research that introduced fluorescent protein genes, producing fish that glow under suitable aquarium lighting.
