Gold Head Neon Blue Ram Care Guide

The Gold Head Neon Blue Ram is a selectively bred colour variety of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, combining a golden-yellow head with intense electric-blue markings across the body and fins. Dark facial lines, red eyes and occasional black markings add contrast to its compact, colourful appearance. Adults usually remain around 5 centimetres long, making them one of the smaller aquarium cichlids.Despite its size, this ram has the characteristic personality of a cichlid. It is observant, expressive and often forms a close pair bond, with individuals displaying through fin extension, colour changes and short territorial chases. Outside spawning periods it is generally relatively peaceful, although pairs can become protective of a chosen site.In nature, Mikrogeophagus ramirezi comes from the Orinoco River basin of Venezuela and Colombia, where it inhabits warm, slow-moving waters, shallow lagoons and seasonally influenced floodplain habitats. These environments commonly contain fine sediments, submerged vegetation, leaf litter and scattered roots that provide shelter and foraging areas.The species was formally described in the twentieth century and became widely known in the aquarium hobby as the ram, butterfly cichlid or German blue ram. The Gold Head Neon Blue form is a captive-bred ornamental strain rather than a distinct wild species, and its striking colours have made it especially popular among dwarf-cichlid enthusiasts.Like many small cichlids, it searches carefully through the substrate for tiny invertebrates and other edible particles. Both parents may participate in guarding eggs and young, making its social and reproductive behaviour unusually complex for such a small freshwater fish.
