Gold Ram Care Guide

The Gold Ram is a golden colour form of the Ram Cichlid, Mikrogeophagus ramirezi. Its warm yellow-gold body is often accented by electric blue speckling, red eyes, dark facial markings and colourful fins, although the intensity of these features varies between strains and individual fish.Despite its small size, this species has the characteristic shape and personality of a dwarf cichlid. It is observant and expressive, spending much of its time near the lower and middle parts of its surroundings while investigating surfaces, displaying to rivals or tending a chosen territory.Wild ram cichlids come from the Orinoco drainage of Venezuela and Colombia, where they inhabit relatively warm, slow-moving waters and shallow seasonal habitats. These environments are typically rich in submerged vegetation, leaf litter and fine sediment, providing abundant small prey and shelter.Pairs form strong bonds during reproduction and both parents may participate in guarding and caring for their eggs and free-swimming young. Their relatively sophisticated social behaviour, combined with their striking appearance, has made them one of the most recognisable dwarf cichlids in the aquarium hobby.The Gold Ram is a selectively developed aquarium variety rather than a naturally occurring colour form. It retains the compact size and general behaviour of the wild species while displaying a predominantly golden body instead of the stronger blue and grey coloration seen in natural populations.
