Golden Chinese Algae Eater Care Guide

The Golden Chinese Algae Eater has the elongated, torpedo-shaped body typical of Gyrinocheilus aymonieri, but its selectively bred golden-yellow coloration makes it especially conspicuous in aquariums. A dark lateral stripe may be reduced or absent, and the fish has a distinctive sucker-like mouth adapted for clinging to surfaces.Young specimens are active algae grazers that spend much of their time attached to glass, rocks, wood and plant leaves. As they mature, they become more assertive and may defend feeding areas or bother slower fish, giving the species a more territorial reputation than its common name suggests.In nature, Gyrinocheilus aymonieri inhabits flowing freshwater environments across parts of mainland Southeast Asia, including rivers, streams and tributaries. Its streamlined body and ventral mouth are well suited to holding position against current while scraping food from submerged surfaces.The species was described from Southeast Asia and is widely traded under several inaccurate or informal names, including Sucking Loach and Indian Algae Eater.
