Golden Dojo Loach Care Guide

The Golden Dojo Loach is a striking colour form of Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, with a long, eel-like body and warm yellow, gold or orange coloration. Its small eyes and mouth are surrounded by several pairs of sensitive barbels that help it explore the substrate and locate food. The body is cylindrical, flexible and built for life among mud, gravel and dense vegetation.This loach is generally peaceful and active, especially during periods of changing weather or atmospheric pressure. It spends much of its time investigating the bottom, weaving through cover and burying itself in soft substrate, but it may also rise through the water column or become unusually lively before storms. Its playful, expressive behaviour has made it a long-standing favourite among freshwater aquarists.In nature, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus inhabits slow-moving streams, ponds, marshes, rice fields and other shallow waters across much of East Asia. It is highly adaptable and can tolerate seasonal changes in temperature and oxygen availability, sometimes gulping air at the surface and absorbing oxygen through its intestine.The species is native to countries including China, Korea, Japan, eastern Russia and parts of Vietnam, and it has also been introduced beyond its original range. Golden specimens are selectively maintained or naturally occurring colour variants rather than a separate species, retaining the hardy nature and characteristic weather-sensing behaviour of the wild Weather Loach.With their rounded faces, tactile barbels and lively personalities, Golden Dojo Loaches are among the most characterful large freshwater bottom-dwellers.
