The Golden Ram is a vivid ornamental form of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, displaying a warm yellow to golden body often accented by orange fins and subtle blue iridescent flecks. Its compact, high-backed shape and expressive eyes give it the classic appearance of a small South American dwarf cichlid.Despite its size, this fish has a lively and intelligent personality. It spends much of its time investigating the substrate and surroundings, and pairs may become strongly territorial when spawning while remaining comparatively peaceful at other times.Wild Mikrogeophagus ramirezi originate in the Orinoco basin of Venezuela and Colombia, where they inhabit shallow, slow-moving waters, flooded savannahs and seasonal pools. These environments commonly have soft substrates, abundant vegetation and submerged wood, with water conditions that can change considerably between wet and dry seasons.The species was first described in the twentieth century and has become one of the best-known dwarf cichlids in the aquarium hobby. The Golden Ram is a selectively developed colour variety rather than a separate wild species, and its popularity comes from combining the ram’s small size and engaging behaviour with a bright golden appearance.Like many cichlids, Golden Rams show complex social behaviour and form monogamous breeding pairs that may jointly guard eggs and young. Their habit of sifting small mouthfuls of substrate for edible organisms is reflected in the meaning of the genus name, Mikrogeophagus, or “small earth-eater.”
