Green Lantern Platy Care Guide

The Green Lantern Platy is a brightly coloured domestic variety of the Southern Platyfish, Xiphophorus maculatus. Its metallic green body and contrasting darker markings give it the distinctive appearance behind the “Green Lantern” trade name, although exact colour patterns vary between strains and breeders.These compact livebearers have a deep, rounded body, a small upturned mouth and a fan-shaped tail. Males are generally more slender, while females are larger and fuller-bodied, and both sexes can display attractive iridescent reflections as they move through the aquarium.In nature, Xiphophorus maculatus occurs in slow-moving freshwater habitats across parts of eastern Mexico and Central America, including ponds, marshes, canals and gently flowing streams. These environments often contain abundant aquatic vegetation and warm, mineral-rich water.Platies are active, social fish that spend much of their time exploring all areas of the water column and grazing on surfaces. Like other livebearers, they give birth to fully formed, free-swimming young rather than laying eggs, and the Green Lantern form is valued primarily for its vivid colour and easygoing community behaviour.
