Half Black Blue Guppy Care Guide

The Half Black Blue Guppy is a selectively bred fancy guppy distinguished by a deep black rear half and blue coloration across the body and flowing tail. Exact colour intensity and pattern can vary considerably between breeding lines, making each fish slightly different in appearance. Males are especially striking, with larger fins and brighter colour, while females have a more substantial body suited to carrying developing young.Like other guppies, this variety is active, alert and constantly exploring its surroundings. Males frequently display to females by spreading their fins and making rapid, shimmering movements, while groups often move through the aquarium in loose, lively associations. Although generally peaceful, their long fins can attract unwanted attention from fin-nipping or aggressive fish.Poecilia reticulata originates in northern South America and nearby islands, including parts of Venezuela, Guyana, Brazil and Trinidad. Wild populations inhabit a broad range of slow-moving freshwater environments, from shallow streams and pools to drainage channels and vegetated margins. Their adaptability has also allowed introduced populations to become established in tropical and subtropical waters in many parts of the world.The species has a long history in ornamental fishkeeping and was named in honour of Robert John Lechmere Guppy, who sent specimens from Trinidad to the scientific community in the nineteenth century. Through selective breeding, wild guppies have produced an enormous variety of colours, patterns and fin shapes, including the Half Black Blue form.Guppies are livebearers, meaning females give birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs.
