The Halfmoon Betta is a selectively bred form of Betta splendens prized for its spectacular caudal fin, which opens into a near-semicircular fan when the fish is displaying. Long flowing fins, intense colors and elaborate patterns make it one of the most recognizable ornamental freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby.Like other Siamese Fighting Fish, Halfmoon Bettas are intelligent, alert and highly individual in personality. Males are strongly territorial toward one another and may flare their gill covers and fins to appear larger, while females can also show territorial behavior, especially in confined spaces.Betta splendens is native to shallow, slow-moving freshwater habitats in Southeast Asia, including rice paddies, marshes, ponds and gently flowing streams. These environments may be densely vegetated and periodically low in oxygen, and the species can breathe atmospheric air using its labyrinth organ.The Halfmoon form is not a naturally occurring wild variety but the result of generations of selective breeding for tail shape and display.
