Hasbrosus Corydora Care Guide

Corydoras habrosus is one of the smallest members of the Corydoras group, reaching only about 3.5 centimetres in length. Its compact body is decorated with a mottled salt-and-pepper pattern, while dark markings along the back and sides help break up its outline. Like other Corydoras, it has bony plates rather than ordinary scales and a pair of delicate barbels around the mouth.This diminutive catfish is a social, peaceful species that spends much of its time exploring the lower parts of its environment. It is lively without being boisterous, often moving among its companions in loose groups and occasionally darting into the midwater before returning to the bottom. Its small size and alert expression give it considerable charm.Corydoras habrosus originates in northern South America, particularly the freshwater river systems of Venezuela and Colombia. In nature it is associated with shallow, slow-moving waters and quiet margins where leaf litter, fine sediment and submerged vegetation provide cover and feeding opportunities.The species belongs to the armored-catfish family Callichthyidae, whose members possess a distinctive double row of protective bony plates. It also has the remarkable ability to gulp atmospheric air and absorb oxygen through its hindgut, an adaptation useful in warm waters that may periodically become oxygen-poor.Although commonly sold as the Salt and Pepper Cory or Dainty Cory, Corydoras habrosus is distinct from the slightly larger pygmy cory species that are also traded under miniature-cory names. Its intricate markings and sociable nature have made it a long-standing favourite among keepers of small freshwater communities.
