Military Helmet Snail Care Guide

The Military Helmet Snail is a striking nerite with a broad, rounded shell that is usually deep brown to nearly black, often with subtle ridges, bands or patches of lighter colour. Its heavy shell and low, helmet-like profile give it a distinctive appearance among aquarium snails.This species is a peaceful, largely nocturnal grazer that spends much of its time moving slowly across glass, rocks, wood and plant leaves. Its strong rasping mouthparts are adapted for scraping algae and biofilm from firm surfaces, while its muscular foot allows it to cling securely in flowing water.Neritina pulligera is associated with rivers, streams and estuarine waterways across the tropical Indo-Pacific region, where populations may encounter both fresh and brackish conditions. Like other nerites, it has a life cycle connected to the sea or estuary, even though adult snails are commonly found and kept in freshwater.The species is valued in aquaria for its attractive shell and effective algae-grazing behaviour. It generally ignores healthy animals and plants, although it may leave small, pale egg capsules on hard surfaces; these capsules can be conspicuous but do not normally develop into juvenile snails in ordinary freshwater.
