Diet
Feed a varied omnivorous diet based on high-quality cichlid foods, spirulina, and occasional meaty foods.
Community Compatibility
Suitable tankmates include similarly sized peaceful Malawi peacocks and compatible, non-aggressive haplochromine cichlids, but avoid mixing with highly aggressive mbuna or closely related strains.
Good to Know
The OB Peacock Cichlid is a selectively bred orange-blotch colour form rather than a single naturally occurring Aulonocara species.
Gender Differences
Males are usually larger and develop vivid blue, orange, or red coloration, while females are smaller and generally brownish or grey with subdued patterning.
About the OB Peacock Cichlid
The OB Peacock Cichlid is a striking aquarium form of Aulonocara, recognised for irregular orange, red, cream, and dark blotches over a body that may also show vivid blue or metallic colour. Because the pattern is highly variable, no two individuals look exactly alike, making each fish distinctive.Aulonocara peacocks are generally calmer than many Malawi cichlids, although males can become territorial around spawning sites. They spend much of their time in the middle and lower parts of the aquarium, frequently hovering over sandy areas while searching for small prey.In nature, Aulonocara species are associated with Lake Malawi, where they inhabit rocky and sandy habitats. Their specialised sensory pores help them detect tiny invertebrates hidden in the substrate, an unusual adaptation among freshwater cichlids. The OB form is a captive-bred colour morph and is commonly traded under the broad name Aulonocara, even though it does not represent one precisely defined wild species. Selective breeding has produced a wide range of blotched patterns and colour combinations, with males typically displaying the strongest colours.Like other mouthbrooding Malawi cichlids, the female carries fertilised eggs and developing fry in her mouth. This reproductive strategy protects the young during their early development and is one of the defining behaviours of the Lake Malawi cichlid group.
