The Orange Pumpkin Shrimp is a vivid selectively bred colour form of Neocaridina davidi, displaying shades that range from translucent tangerine to rich pumpkin orange. Its small body is curved and segmented, with delicate walking legs, fan-shaped pleopods and tiny claws used for grazing and handling food. Colour intensity varies between individuals and can change with age, genetics and background.This shrimp is generally peaceful and spends much of its time methodically exploring surfaces. It grazes across leaves, wood, rocks and other objects with specialised mouthparts, picking up biofilm, algae and microscopic organic material. Females are usually larger and more robust than males, and mature females may carry a distinct saddle behind the head or a cluster of eggs beneath the abdomen.Neocaridina davidi is native to freshwater environments in East Asia, where related populations occur in streams, ponds, ditches and slow-moving waterways.
