Platinum Blood Parrot Cichlid Care Guide

The Platinum Blood Parrot Cichlid is a striking pale or silvery-white colour form of the blood parrot cichlid, often displaying a pearly sheen and compact, rounded body. Its unusual beak-like mouth and disproportionately large eyes give it a distinctive appearance that is instantly recognisable in the aquarium trade.Like other blood parrot cichlids, it is an artificial hybrid associated with Central American cichlids, particularly forms derived from Amphilophus citrinellus and related species. The name Amphilophus citrinellus is therefore commonly used in trade, but it describes one of the parental species rather than the hybrid itself.These fish are active, observant and intelligent, often investigating objects and responding to activity outside the aquarium. They can be moderately territorial, especially as adults, while generally being less forceful than many of the large Central American cichlids from which their lineage originated.Wild blood parrot cichlids have no natural habitat because they were created through selective hybridisation in captivity. Their ancestral fish come from the lakes, rivers and rocky coastal waters of Central America, where cichlids occupy a wide variety of habitats and exhibit complex territorial and social behaviour.The Platinum form is produced through selective breeding for its unusual colouration rather than representing a wild geographic variety. Blood parrot cichlids are also notable for their frequently reduced fertility, a consequence of their hybrid origin, although occasional breeding behaviour may still occur.
