Rainbow Tetra Care Guide

The Rainbow Tetra, Nematobrycon lacortei, is a small, elegant characin with an iridescent body that can shimmer through blue, green, gold and reddish tones. Its dark lateral markings and colourful fins give it a particularly striking appearance, while the males often develop a more elongated and impressive fin profile.This species is a peaceful midwater shoaling fish that becomes most confident and visually impressive in a group. Rainbow Tetras are active without being boisterous, and their constant social movement creates a lively display as they weave among one another.Nematobrycon lacortei originates in Colombia in the Río Calima drainage and associated forest streams. Its natural environment consists of warm, slow-moving or gently flowing waters shaded by dense vegetation, with submerged roots, leaf litter and tannin-stained conditions common in the surrounding habitat.The species belongs to the same genus as the better-known Emperor Tetra but is distinguished by its distinctive multicoloured sheen. Although it remains less common in the aquarium trade, its combination of peaceful behaviour and shimmering colour has made it a valued choice for carefully planned community aquariums.
