About the Red Fin Borleyi Kadango
The Red Fin Borleyi Kadango is a striking Lake Malawi cichlid prized for the contrast between the male’s intense blue body and vivid red, orange or yellow fins. Females and juveniles are much more subdued, usually showing silvery, brownish or grey coloration, while mature males develop their strongest colours when courting or defending a territory. This fish belongs to the haplochromine group and has the deep-bodied profile typical of many Malawi cichlids. Its pointed fins and relatively large mouth reflect a lifestyle centred on picking small food items from the open water and rocky surroundings rather than grazing continuously like many mbuna. In nature, Copadichromis borleyi occurs around rocky shores and offshore reefs in Lake Malawi, where it occupies the transition between rock formations and open water. The Kadango region is particularly associated with the bold red-finned colour form that is popular in the aquarium trade.Like other maternal mouthbrooders, the species has a fascinating reproductive strategy: after spawning, the female collects the eggs in her mouth and protects them there until the fry are developed enough to swim independently. Males are territorial during breeding but the species is generally less relentlessly combative than many highly aggressive Malawi cichlids.
