The Red Hump Eartheater is a deep-bodied South American cichlid with an expressive face, subtly iridescent scales and warm reddish or orange colouration that becomes especially vivid during courtship. Adult males are notably larger and may develop a pronounced fleshy hump behind the head, giving the species its memorable common name.Geophagus steindachneri spends much of its time close to the bottom, where it constantly investigates sand and fine sediment. It takes mouthfuls of substrate, filters out small invertebrates and organic particles, and releases the unwanted material through its gills. This distinctive feeding behaviour gives the group its scientific name, which broadly means “earth-eater.”The species is native to freshwater systems of northern Colombia, including parts of the Magdalena River basin and nearby drainages. Its natural environment includes warm rivers, tributaries and quieter margins with soft bottoms, submerged structure and variable current, where the fish searches for food among the sediment.Red Hump Eartheaters are social but can become territorial, particularly when pairing and spawning. They are maternal mouthbrooders: after the eggs hatch, the female protects the young in her mouth, releasing them to feed and gathering them back when danger threatens.
