Red Nose Shrimp Care Guide

The Red Nose Shrimp, Caridina gracilirostris, is a delicate, slender shrimp distinguished by its long, pointed rostrum and translucent body. Its coloration can range from nearly clear to pale amber or greenish, often with a subtle reddish line or markings along the back and tail, while the elongated nose gives it an unmistakable profile.This species is generally peaceful and spends much of its time grazing across surfaces, probing among plants and moving through fine-leaved vegetation with its constantly active appendages. Its transparent appearance provides a degree of camouflage, although its unusual silhouette makes it easy to recognize in a planted aquarium.Red Nose Shrimp are associated with tropical freshwater habitats in South and Southeast Asia, including calm streams, swamps and vegetated areas influenced by seasonal changes in water conditions. Their life cycle is linked to environments where freshwater and slightly brackish water may meet, particularly during the development of their young.The species name gracilirostris means “slender-nosed,” an apt reference to the remarkably extended rostrum that defines this shrimp. In the aquarium trade it is also frequently sold as the Pinocchio Shrimp or Rudolph Shrimp, names inspired by its prominent red-tipped nose.
