Red Tiger Platy Care Guide

The Red Tiger Platy is a brightly patterned ornamental variety of the Southern Platyfish, with a warm red base colour overlaid by dark bars, patches or tiger-like markings. Its compact, deep-bodied shape and constantly active swimming make it a popular display fish, while individual patterns can vary considerably between specimens.This platy is generally peaceful and sociable, spending much of its time exploring open water and browsing across surfaces for edible growth. It is lively without being especially aggressive, although males may persistently court females and compete with one another.Xiphophorus maculatus naturally occurs in freshwater habitats of eastern Mexico, Guatemala and nearby parts of Central America. Wild populations inhabit slow-moving streams, ponds, marshes and areas with abundant vegetation, where the fish can find shelter and food among plants and debris.Like other livebearers, the Red Tiger Platy gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. It has been selectively bred into numerous colour and fin forms, and its hardiness, active personality and striking appearance have made it one of the best-known community aquarium fish.
