Redline Tetra Care Guide

The Redline Tetra is a small, elegant characin with a translucent silver to amber body and a distinctive orange-red stripe running from the snout through the eye and along the sides toward the tail. Its fins are mostly transparent, while the bright lateral marking becomes especially striking against a darker background.This species is peaceful, active and strongly social, spending much of its time moving through the middle levels of the water in a coordinated shoal. Although individually modest in size, a group creates a lively display as the fish weave together and flash their glowing stripe when they turn.Hemigrammus erythrozonus comes from the Essequibo River basin in Guyana, where it inhabits shaded forest streams and tributaries. These waters are typically soft, acidic and stained by leaf litter and other organic material, producing the subdued conditions associated with many South American tetras.The species was described in 1939 and soon became popular in the aquarium trade because of its attractive coloration and manageable size. Its common name, Glowlight Tetra, refers to the bright red-orange line that gives the fish its characteristic illuminated appearance.Redline Tetras are egg-scattering characins, and their subtle sexual differences are most apparent when mature females become noticeably rounder. Their combination of peaceful behaviour, shimmering colour and compact form has made them a long-standing favourite among community-aquarium keepers.
