Rusty Pleco Care Guide

The Rusty Pleco, Panaqolus albivermis, is a compact loricariid catfish with a dark brown to black base colour marked by pale cream or whitish vermiculations and spots. Its patterning, robust armour-plated body and broad sucker mouth give it the classic appearance of a wood-eating pleco, while its fins may show warm orange or rusty tones that inspire its common name.This species is primarily nocturnal and spends much of the day resting on submerged wood, rockwork or shaded surfaces. It is generally peaceful toward other fish, although mature individuals may defend a preferred cave or feeding area from similarly shaped bottom dwellers.In nature, Panaqolus albivermis comes from the soft, warm, flowing waters of the western Amazonian region of South America. Its habitat is associated with submerged timber, rocky crevices and river margins where leaf litter and woody debris provide both shelter and food.Like other members of Panaqolus, the Rusty Pleco has specialised scraping teeth and a digestive system adapted to processing wood fibres. It is a popular aquarium fish because it remains considerably smaller than many traditional plecos while retaining the unusual appearance and fascinating behaviour of a loricariid catfish.The species is also widely known by its L-number, L204, reflecting the long-standing practice of assigning temporary identification codes to distinctive plecos in the ornamental fish trade. These codes remain important to aquarists because similar-looking loricariids can differ substantially in adult size, locality and identity.
