About the Sailfin Molly

The Sailfin Molly is a striking livebearer distinguished by the male's exceptionally tall dorsal fin, which may be displayed prominently during courtship and rivalry. Wild fish are usually silvery, gray, olive or greenish with subtle spotting, while aquarium strains have been developed in black, white, gold, dalmatian and other color patterns. Females are generally larger and deeper-bodied than males. This species is active, curious and generally peaceful, although males may pursue females persistently and compete with one another through displays. Sailfin Mollies are social fish that spend time throughout the water column, investigating vegetation, open water and surfaces where edible growth may occur.Poecilia latipinna is native to coastal and inland waters of the southeastern United States and Mexico, including Florida, the Gulf Coast and the Yucatán region. It occurs in slow-moving streams, marshes, lagoons, ponds and other habitats that can range from freshwater to mildly brackish conditions.Like other livebearers, the Sailfin Molly gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. The species has been widely introduced beyond its natural range and has become an important ancestor of many ornamental molly varieties found in the aquarium trade. The large dorsal fin is most developed in mature males and serves as a visual signal during social interactions. Wild Sailfin Mollies are also known for their tolerance of changing salinity, a trait associated with their coastal and estuarine origins.
