The Silver Tipped Tetra, Hasemania nana, is a small South American characin with a slim, streamlined body and a warm golden-to-copper sheen. Its most distinctive feature is the bright silvery-white edging on the fins, which flashes as the fish moves through the water. Males are typically more vivid and slender than females.These tetras are lively, alert schooling fish that spend much of their time weaving through the middle and upper areas of the water column. They are generally peaceful, though their energetic nature and occasional fin-nipping behaviour are most noticeable when they are kept in too small a group or with very slow-moving fish.Hasemania nana originates in eastern Brazil, where it is associated with small streams, tributaries and calm forested waters. Its natural surroundings may include submerged roots, leaf litter, aquatic vegetation and shaded banks, creating a broken pattern of light and cover.The species was first described in the nineteenth century and remains a popular aquarium fish because of its compact size, metallic coloration and active schooling displays.
