Skittles Shrimp Care Guide

Skittles Shrimp are colorful freshwater dwarf shrimp belonging to the species Neocaridina davidi. The name refers to the vivid mixture of color forms that may appear in a colony, including red, orange, yellow, blue, greenish and wild-type brown shades. Their small bodies and delicate walking legs make them fascinating inhabitants of the aquarium floor.These shrimp are peaceful and constantly active, picking over surfaces with specialized appendages as they search for edible particles. They graze on biofilm, algae and organic debris, often pausing to wave their tiny fans and mouthparts through the water. Although individual shrimp are small and easily overlooked, a thriving group creates a lively and constantly moving display.Neocaridina davidi is native to freshwater habitats in East Asia, where it occurs in streams, ponds, ditches and slow-moving waters rich in vegetation and submerged surfaces. Wild populations are generally more subdued in color than selectively bred aquarium strains, which have been developed for stronger and more varied pigmentation.The species has become one of the most popular ornamental freshwater invertebrates because of its hardiness, peaceful nature and readily observed breeding behaviour. Females carry developing eggs beneath the abdomen, and young hatch as miniature versions of the adults rather than passing through a free-swimming larval stage.Skittles Shrimp are not a single naturally occurring color variety but a trade grouping of mixed Neocaridina davidi color morphs. When different strains reproduce together, their descendants may show a broad range of patterns and can gradually return toward wild-type coloration over successive generations.
