Star Sapphire Aulonocara Care Guide

The Star Sapphire is a selectively bred Aulonocara, commonly sold as a peacock cichlid because of the brilliant iridescent colors displayed by mature males. Its body is typically dominated by luminous blue tones, often highlighted by sparkling spots, darker facial markings and contrasting yellow, orange or blue fin edges. Females are much less vividly colored and usually retain muted brownish or silvery hues.Like other peacock cichlids, it is a moderately sized mouthbrooding cichlid with an elongated, laterally compressed body and large, expressive eyes. Specialized sensory pores around the snout help Aulonocara detect small invertebrates hidden in sandy sediment, an adaptation that gives the group its characteristic habit of hovering just above the lakebed before dropping down to investigate.Aulonocara originate from Lake Malawi in East Africa, where related forms inhabit clear, alkaline waters around rocky shores, sandy bays and gently sloping transition zones. The name Star Sapphire refers to an ornamental color strain rather than a single formally recognized wild species, and fish sold under this label may have ancestry from several Aulonocara lines.Males are territorial and display their colors during courtship, while females are comparatively inconspicuous and carry fertilized eggs in their mouths.
