The Strawberry Peacock Cichlid is a striking aquarium form of Aulonocara, prized for its vivid strawberry-red, orange and pink coloration. Depending on the strain, males may also show iridescent blue on the face, fins or body, while females are typically much more understated. Its rounded profile and elongated finnage give it the elegant appearance associated with peacock cichlids.Aulonocara are native to Lake Malawi in East Africa, one of the world’s great centres of freshwater fish diversity. Wild peacock cichlids are associated largely with sandy areas and rocky margins, where they search the substrate for tiny invertebrates hidden beneath the surface.This cichlid uses sensory pores in its lower jaw to detect prey concealed in the sand. It glides over the bottom and makes brief head-down movements to locate insect larvae and small crustaceans, an unusual feeding strategy among larger African cichlids.The name Strawberry Peacock is primarily a trade name rather than a formal scientific species designation.
