About the Strawberry Tetra
The Strawberry Tetra, Hyphessobrycon amandae, is a minute characin with a striking translucent body washed in strawberry-red, orange and amber tones. Its vivid colour is especially noticeable when the fish moves as a coordinated group, creating a warm, flickering display in the aquarium.This species is peaceful and sociable, spending much of its time in the middle levels of the water column. Although individuals are small, a group shows a lively social rhythm, with brief displays, gentle chasing and constant movement among its companions.Strawberry Tetras originate in the slow-moving, acidic waters of the Araguaia River basin in Brazil. Their natural environment includes quiet tributaries, flooded forest margins and streams shaded by overhanging vegetation, where leaf litter and tannins can give the water a tea-like colour.The species was described in 1987 and named Hyphessobrycon amandae in honour of Amanda Bleher, the mother of the ichthyologist Heiko Bleher. Its tiny size, brilliant colour and calm nature have made it one of the best-known nano fish in the ornamental aquarium trade.
