Sulfer-Headed Hap Care Guide

The Sulfur-Headed Hap, Otopharynx lithobates, is a handsome Malawi cichlid recognised for the dramatic contrast between the yellow or sulfur-coloured head of the adult male and his blue-toned body. Females and immature fish are much more understated, usually appearing silvery or grey with darker markings.This species is a moderately assertive hap rather than a relentlessly aggressive cichlid. Males can become territorial, particularly when displaying or spawning, but their behaviour is often less combative than that of many Malawi mbuna. Females and younger fish tend to be more reserved and may show subtle barring when unsettled.Otopharynx lithobates occurs naturally in Lake Malawi, where it is associated with rocky areas and sandy habitats. Its feeding ecology reflects this mixed environment, with the fish picking through the substrate and searching around rocks for small invertebrates and other edible material.Like other Lake Malawi haps, it is part of a diverse radiation of cichlids that evolved into specialised forms within the lake. The species is especially valued in aquaria for the vivid adult male coloration, attractive profile and comparatively composed presence among similarly sized Malawi cichlids.
