The Sunset Platy is a brightly coloured cultivated variety of Xiphophorus maculatus, typically displaying a golden-yellow, orange and red gradient across the body. Its compact, deep-bodied shape and rounded fins give it the classic platy profile, while colour intensity varies between strains and individual fish.This is a peaceful, active livebearer that spends time throughout the aquarium rather than remaining in one fixed area. Sunset Platies are sociable fish and are often seen exploring, grazing on surfaces and interacting gently with other members of their group.Wild Xiphophorus maculatus originates in freshwater habitats of eastern Mexico and parts of Central America, including slow-moving streams, pools and vegetated waterways. These environments can be bright, warm and rich in aquatic plant growth, with water chemistry that is commonly neutral to alkaline.Platies belong to the livebearing family Poeciliidae, and females give birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. The Sunset Platy is not a naturally occurring wild colour variety but a selectively developed aquarium strain descended from the naturally patterned southern platy.
