Sunshine Shrimp Care Guide

The Sunshine Shrimp is a bright yellow-gold color morph of Neocaridina davidi, prized for its cheerful coloration and compact size. Individuals may range from translucent lemon yellow to rich golden tones, with color intensity influenced by genetics, age and condition. Females are generally larger and more strongly built than males.These small shrimp are peaceful, active scavengers that spend much of their time walking across surfaces and grazing on biofilm. Their fan-like appendages allow them to collect minute food particles, while their walking legs help them explore plants, wood, rock and other surfaces. They may also swim briefly when disturbed or moving between locations.Neocaridina davidi originates in freshwater habitats across parts of East Asia, where related wild populations inhabit streams, ponds, ditches and slow-moving waterways. Wild specimens are typically brownish or translucent, and the vivid Sunshine coloration is the result of generations of selective breeding in the aquarium trade.Like other Neocaridina, this shrimp carries its eggs beneath the abdomen until fully formed miniature young hatch. The offspring develop directly into tiny versions of the adults rather than passing through a free-swimming marine larval stage, making the species especially popular among freshwater shrimp keepers.Sunshine Shrimp are also valuable members of an aquarium's cleanup community, although they are not a substitute for normal aquarium maintenance. Their small size, peaceful nature and striking color make them a popular choice for planted freshwater displays.
