Veiled Angelfish Care Guide

The Veiled Angelfish is a selectively bred form of the freshwater angelfish, Pterophyllum scalare, distinguished by its dramatically elongated dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. Its tall, laterally compressed body gives it an elegant, leaf-like silhouette, while colour varieties may include silver, marble, gold, black, or combinations of these patterns.This angelfish is generally graceful and deliberate in its movements, often hovering among plants and vertical decorations. Although it can be peaceful when young, adults may become territorial, particularly when pairing or spawning, and their long fins can make them vulnerable to persistent fin-nipping tankmates.In nature, Pterophyllum scalare inhabits the slow-moving waters of the Amazon Basin and neighbouring South American river systems. It is associated with flooded forests, quiet tributaries, and densely vegetated margins, where its tall body helps it manoeuvre between roots, stems, and submerged branches.The species was first described in the nineteenth century and has become one of the best-known aquarium cichlids. Its distinctive shape, social behaviour, and parental care have made it a longstanding favourite, while the Veiled form remains especially popular for its flowing fins.Like many cichlids, Veiled Angelfish form pair bonds and may defend a spawning site when breeding. Both parents can participate in guarding eggs and young, revealing a more attentive side to this otherwise poised and observant fish.
