Yellow Tail Acei Care Guide

The Yellow Tail Acei is a striking Lake Malawi cichlid with a deep blue to blue-violet body, yellow to golden fins and a sturdy, moderately elongated shape. Colour intensity can vary between populations, with the contrasting tail and dorsal fin giving this fish its popular name.Like other mbuna, it is active and assertive, but it is generally less relentlessly aggressive than many closely related rock-dwelling cichlids. It forms loose social groups and spends much of its time grazing surfaces, exploring its surroundings and displaying to rivals or potential mates.In nature, Yellow Tail Acei occur in Lake Malawi, particularly around areas with rocky margins, sediment and submerged wood. Their association with woody habitats is notable because many mbuna are more strongly tied to exposed rocky reefs.The species is commonly traded as Pseudotropheus acei or Pseudotropheus sp. 'Acei', although its classification and population names have changed over time. It is a maternal mouthbrooder: after spawning, the female carries the eggs and developing fry in her mouth until they are ready to emerge.Yellow Tail Acei are valued in Malawi cichlid aquariums for their vivid colour, constant activity and comparatively sociable nature. Their bold appearance makes them one of the most recognisable blue-and-yellow mbuna in the hobby.
