Yellow Tiger Cichlids Care Guide

The Yellow Tiger Cichlid, Pseudotropheus crabro, is a robust Lake Malawi mbuna recognized for its striking yellow, orange and dark vertical barring. Young fish and many females often display the familiar bumblebee-like pattern, while adult males may become much darker, particularly when displaying or breeding.This species has a powerful, deep-bodied shape suited to life among rocky shores and submerged reefs. Its coloration is variable, with intensity influenced by age, sex, social status and mood, making mature males especially dramatic compared with juveniles.In the wild, Yellow Tiger Cichlids inhabit the rocky areas of Lake Malawi, where they pick through surfaces for aufwuchs and small food organisms. They are also known for entering caves and crevices, where they may exploit fish eggs and other small prey, giving them a more predatory reputation than many algae-grazing mbuna.Like other mbuna, Pseudotropheus crabro is territorial and socially assertive. Males defend favored rocky spaces and females are mouthbrooders, carrying fertilized eggs and developing young in their mouths until the fry are released.The species was formerly placed in the genus Pseudotropheus and is widely sold under the common names Bumblebee Cichlid and Hornet Cichlid. Its bold pattern and unusual ability to change from bright yellow to nearly black have made it a popular and easily recognized Lake Malawi cichlid.
